Music & Music Education
... Because Music is More than the Instrument

Music & More, Inc. is an independent musical instrument sales, rental, repair and music education company located in the Lower Cape Fear Region of North Carolina. Our company was founded in 1994 by Richard V. Purcell, a longtime music teacher and professional musician. Richard has a real passion for music and education, and he brings more than 30 years of experience to our students, customers and community education partners.

At Music & More, we focus on the instrumental and educational needs of beginning and advanced music students in public and private school-based band and orchestra programs. The instruments we offer for band and orchestra study -- brass, woodwind, percussion and orchestral strings -- are band-director recommended and educator-approved. Naturally, instruments must meet our own rigorous standards, too. To explore the brands and music accessories we trust, click here.

Moreover, Music & More is also a member of the Veritas Instrument Rental Affiliate Network, a nationally recognized school music resource. Veritas and its members are known for offering quality options and value to students and parents and for the commitment members make to educators, students and music education.

In addition to students in school, we equally serve independent music students, as well as professional musicians who perform across the Carolinas.

At Music & More, we also offer private music lessons and group instruction, and we're considering master classes for intermediate and advanced students in 2008-2009. (Help us decide!) Group classes and private studies are taught in our fully equipped rehearsal and instruction studio in Wilmington, NC.

Tour the Music & More Studio … take a break and enjoy the music.  And yes, we do lease the studio from time to time, but our main focus stays on the study of music. Still, you can contact us to talk about your studio or rehearsal needs. Just email, or call 910.686.0607.

Our Service Philosophy Sows our Business Practice

Our philosophy is simple. Essentially, we connect students and performers to the instrument and service that makes the best sense for them, and we support their musical studies and experience note by note. If you find we don't offer the stock carried by the big store music guys, then we have a reason for that. To us 'less is more' because we always stand behind our products and our priority remains on unparalleled, personal service.

Music really is more than a business product; it's a process that makes meaning in the musical experience. And we want to enjoy and learn from your musical experiences as much as you do.

In a nutshell, we're a friendly, fun, full-service company that doesn't want to grow too much, because your education and musical experience are central to the passion that brings harmony to the business of music. Explore more about our philosophy, community reach ... meet our maestro up close and personal -- here's the full profile or simply review the basic bio on the maestro, Richard Purcell.

You might also like to know what our students, musicians and patrons have to say. Or, simply contact us about the musical experience or instrument that's important to you. Just email, or call 910.686.0607.

Committed to Educational Excellence

We'd prefer not to talk about our commitment to music education, we'd rather be doing it. It's the cornerstone of our service to student and school families, to musicians, performing patrons and the community. We know that educational excellence makes a melody in the hum of how we live, learn and grow.

On that note, we're committed to share our knowledge. Likewise, we welcome your comments, suggestions, musical experiences and educational anecdotes. Learn from our educational resources ... feel free to distribute and contribute, too.

The Extended Philosophy ... Stuff we Support and Believe in ...

Since our focus is on music education, then naturally our philosophy extends through the work and commitments of our fellow performers and supportive audiences. We value our relationships with musicians, students and the schools that support us and them, along with the periphreal support that comes from professional performers and their audiences, and our network of business partners and affiliations.

If we listed them all, we wouldn't have time to do what we do, yet we'd like to mention a few:

  • The Band Connection is an interschool band program designed to strengthen student skill and music education studies through performance, while extending music appreciation opportunities to the Cape Fear Region of North Carolina.
  • The Vh1 Save The Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education programs in America’s public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s complete education.
The Music & More Maestro, Richard V. Purcell

Richard is the company's maestro, and he's also a professional performer and veteran educator who has taught Music Education and Instrumental Music for over 30 years in private and public schools. He founded the music company Music & More in 1994 -- motivated by a desire to support the work, instrumentation and advancement of his own student musicians. He was a teacher at the time. He remains focused on education today.

Presently, Richard teaches band in several private schools in New Hanover and Columbus counties. He is credited with the development of The Band Connection, an interschool band program designed to strengthen student skill and music education studies through performance, while extending music appreciation opportunities to the Cape Fear Region of North Carolina. In addition, Richard manages operations of a busy music studio off Middle Sound Loop Road in Wilmington, NC.

Richard holds a Master of Arts in Teaching Music Education K-l2 from Manhattanville College, a Bachelor of Science in Music from Mercy College, extensive studies at the Mannes College of Music, and a New York State Permanent Teacher Certification in Music Education K-12. He lives in Wilmington with his wife and two children.

Richard brings much more than an educational background to the company. As a skilled musician, he has worked and performed with professional and semi-professional bands and orchestras throughout the United States and Europe. His most recent on-stage credential comes by way of Bolden!, an independent film about jazz cornet player Buddy 'King' Bolden.
Bolden! was produced in 2008 -- get the detailed story here.
